It’s no secret that Leica adores its limited edition products, and the company’s well-known full-frame small Q2 camera is a prime example. Just over a year ago, it launched the Leica Q2 “007” edition, and just a few months ago, it unveiled the Leica Q2 “Dawn” by Seal. This time, the brand has once again partnered with Hodinkee, a well-known site dedicated to watches and horology.
Leica and Hodinkee’s first joint project was the M10-P “Ghost Edition” for Hodinkee, which was introduced in 2019. Owing to the success of that design, the brands teamed up to bring a “Ghost” version of the Q2.
With its classic exquisite design, the Leica Q2 “Ghost” by Hodinkee pays tribute to a renowned diving watch known to enthusiasts as “Ghost Bezel.” The iconic classic watch with its extremely uncommon grey bezel (ring around the dial) served as inspiration for the Leica designers and Hodinkee, who came up with the special Q2 model’s exquisite, understated coloring.
The “Ghost Set”
The light grey Ghost colorway, which is a significant departure from the black paint often seen on the standard body of the Leica Q2 is designed to evoke the ghostly faded bezels of some of the Hodinkee’s favorite well-loved dive watches.
The Leica Q2 “Ghost” Set By Hodinkee also includes a grey woven Leica rope strap that matches the “Ghost Edition” M10-P to complete the ghostly and gloomy look. A distinctive full-grain cow skin grey armoring is also included with the camera, limited to only 150 full sets.
As it did with the Leica M10-P “Ghost Edition” for Hodinkee, the standard “red dot” Leica logo has been deleted, and the top plate signature has been recreated with Leica’s classic signature in yet another warm grey shade, further elevating the monochromatic aesthetic.
According to Hodinkee, the anodized silver finish on the glass alludes to the “steel case of a strong dive watch.” It arrives with a silver metal thumb grip.
The words “GHOST SET BY HODINKEE” are engraved above the display & the specific serial number of sets is carved below it on the back of the Q2’s 3-inch LCD. All these little things add together to make the Leica Q2 Ghost a unique and desirable limited edition of a highly remarkable camera.
A Classic Q2
The Leica Q2 “Ghost” is a regular Q2 camera hidden behind the soft, monochrome finishes. It is assembled with a Maestro II image processor and a 47.3-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor.
This sensor is coupled with a class-leading autofocus lens, the Summilux 28mm f/1.7, that got dedicated macro mode for times you want to get up close and shoot even more details. At higher ISOs, it offers 13 stops of dynamic range and generally decent noise management.
