Nikon is known for making some of the best cameras and lenses out there and their Z mount system is just truly remarkable. Expanding on the same mount system, Nikon has announced a new super-telephoto lens, the new NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S.
Nikon changed to the new Nikon Z mount for their full-frame/FX-format mirrorless cameras. This new NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S lens is going to work seamlessly with the Nikon Z mount system. So all users having Nikon mirrorless cameras should be excited about this lens.
The problem with super-telephoto lenses is that they are always too big to carry, maneuver, and handle. The new NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S lens tries to eliminate that problem with its lightweight and compact size. At about 1,160 grams without the tripod collar, this lens becomes one of the lightest in its range, and it is ideal for handheld shooting.
The length of the lens is around 234.5mm so it can be used for prolonged hours while capturing wildlife and even covering sports events.
As mentioned earlier, this lens is aimed at users who want handheld shooting and the lens aids it by shifting its center of gravity closer to the camera. Because of that, it becomes easy to use it handheld and keep it stable.
Although this is a prime lens with a focal length of 400mm, users get the option to use Z TELECONVERTER TC-1.4x to extend the focal length to 560mm. The lens also supports Z TELECONVERTER TC-2.0x which can extend the length to 800mm.
Users can also extend the focal length up to 600mm simply by changing the camera settings and without any teleconverter.
The S is the new NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S indicates that this is part of the S-Line family and the S-Line is known for its ultimate optical performance.
The lens has a complex yet effective arrangement of one ED glass element, two Super ED glass elements, and one SR lens element.
Because of this, Nikon archives compact size while maintaining superior optical performance. This configuration also eliminates chromatic aberration as much as it can.
The new NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S also achieves 3D rendering because it can have a maximum aperture of f/4.5. Because of this, the subject just stands out like nothing else and the resulting image is phenomenal.
The lens also has the highest shutter speed in the NIKKOR Z series. To achieve that, Nikon has installed an optical vibration reduction (VR) mechanism. So the lens shoots at an equivalent shutter speed of 5.5 stops.
Super-telephoto lenses are extensively used in sports and users need fast AF to capture objects at blazing speed. For that, this lens comes with a stepping motor (STM). The motor assists in achieving precise AF quickly.
Since the lens will be used in challenging conditions in wildlife and sports action, it has to be rugged and this one has one of the best dust- and drip-resistant performance. Nikon has also applied a fluorine coat on it to make it anti-fouling.
There is a memory recall button on the lens that allows users to set focus points in advance and when needed, they can recall those points instantly with a press of a button.
So if you are an amateur photographer who likes to capture birds or stuff flying at a distance then this lens is definitely going to be good for you. It will also be good for all the professional wildlife and sports photographers who find themselves in the heat of action all the time. With its lightweight and compact design, the lens is good for all shutterbugs.
